Thomas will be sixteen years old this year. His father is in the army, and the family has recently relocated to a town in New South Wales; his mother is expecting a child; and his older brother, Charlie, who is autistic, is dealing with his own adolescent sexual troubles. When Thomas is attracted to Jackie, a girl in his swim class, Charlie provides any number of difficulties when she drops by their house, when the three of them go for a stroll, and when they have a family birthday meal together.
