An artist and botanist named Frédéric Lansac has a crazy romance with a party girl named Moira, but he ends it when he meets the gorgeous Anne. Frédéric and Anne get married, but the happy occasion is marred by tragedy when Anne's sister Moira shows up at the reception and causes a commotion, leading to her falling into a blaze. A pair of deaf and dumb dwarfs are Frédéric's attendants, and he and Anne have locked themselves in his home together. It should come as no surprise that Anne develops a sour and demanding disposition. After Frédéric has told everyone that Anne has passed away, he secretly hires a nurse to care for her in private.
