A cross-country road race is based on a real event, the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which Brock Yates set up to protest the 55 mph speed limit in the U.S. at the time. The Cannonball was named after Erwin G. "Cannonball" Baker, who in the Roaring 20s rode his motorcycle across the country. Many of the characters are based on tricks that real Cannonball racers came up with over the years that the event took place.
