After her husband's death, the mother of Julie, Jack, Sue, and Tom has a mystery disease. Aware that she may need to enter the hospital, she opens a bank account for the children so that they can become financially independent and escape being taken into state custody. Julie and Jack (the older, adolescent children) decide to hide her body in the basement so that they may have complete control over the household. Tom soon began dressing as a woman, while Sue grew increasingly shy and confided solely in her diary; meantime, Jack and Julie felt an attraction building. As he gets increasingly skeptical of Jack, however, Derek, Julie's new boyfriend, threatens to reveal the family's numerous dark secrets.
