Diego Padilla wins the Spanish Chess Championship in 1934 and falls in love with a French journalist named Marianne Latour. Marianne encourages Diego to relocate to France with their daughter at the end of the Civil War, where Diego is soon accused of spying by the Nazis and imprisoned in an SS jail. Diego will attempt to survive in a difficult atmosphere in prison, courtesy of Colonel Maier's chess obsession.
