A unknown client's harsh sidekick hires surveillance expert Harry Caul to track a young couple. Caul and his assistant Stan track the couple across Union Square in San Francisco and manage to record a strange chat between them. Caul gets obsessed with the resulting recording, trying to discern if the pair is in danger, as he is tormented by recollections of a past case that ended poorly.
