Jim Bennett, a literature professor, has a side business as a high-stakes gambler. Bennett, who is known for taking risks, risks everything when he takes out a loan from a gangster and puts his life on the line as collateral. He pits his creditor against the owner of an illegal gambling ring while attracting the attention of Frank, a paternalistic loan shark, in order to stay one step ahead.
