American teenager Cassie Grant (Christina Ricci) is on foot in England. Cassie gets struck by a vehicle while traveling to Ashby Wake. Mrs. Marion Kirkman (Kerry Fox), the car's driver, summons an ambulance promptly. During an assessment at the local hospital, the doctor determines that Cassie has just minor scrapes and no concussion, but she has lost her memory as a result of the event. She is unaware of her hometown, family, and reason for being in England.
