When Paul Madvig chooses to run for reelection, he decides to renounce the support of the mobster Nick Varna and associate himself with Ralph Henry, a reformist politician. Paul's right arm, Ed Beaumont, discovers the body of Taylor Henry, Ralph's gambler son and the lover of Paul's sister Opal. Clyde Matthews, the publisher of The Observer, is pressured by Nick to believe that Paul Madvig killed Taylor because of the newspaper's financial predicament.
