The Grown-Ups
Children with Down syndrome, Anita, Rita, Ricardo, and Andrés, have been attending a special education school for almost 40 years. This comfortable and familiar environment is becoming stale to them after so much time. Some of them are over 45 years old and believe that working in the school bakery is no longer a challenge. Moreover, they wish to be free on a more individual level. Though in love, Anita and Andrés continue to live with their parents and other family members. They long for a quiet area where they can spend quality time together, and they hope to marry and start a family. Unfortunately, the culture in which they live is not set up to accommodate their need for greater freedom in their lives. Although they are given instruction on how to be "responsible adults," all four of them continue to rely on others to make decisions for them, which causes them great frustration.
