Nick Lang, a Hollywood action star, wants to improve his reputation as an actor and land a role as a tough cop on a new show. He makes a deal with Capt. Brix, a New York City police officer who happens to be one of his fans. Nick will work with Lt. John Moss, a detective, and learn how to act like a real police officer, as well. With his questions and mimicry, Nick makes John crazy. This makes it hard for John to find out about a serial killer, because Nick gets in the way of his search.
