Aibileen Clark is a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson is an African-American maid who has frequently offended her employers despite her family's financial struggles and her desperate need for work; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan is a young white woman who has recently returned home after graduating from college to discover her childhood maid has mysteriously vanished. These three stories weave together to show how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help," despite the fact that they are always kept at a safe distance due to racial barriers.
