A Mexican teacher guides a Christ figure and other disciples to a mountain inhabited by immortal sages. Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain, the controversy of the Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a spiritual search for enlightenment that pits illusion against the reality and is filled with sacrilegious imagery and existential symbolism. The Alchemist (Jodorowsky) assembles a diverse group of individuals to represent the solar system's planets. Before going on a journey to Lotus Island, the occult expert intends to subject his recruits to bizarre mystical ceremonies that would rid them of their worldly burden. There, they mount the Holy Mountain in an effort to oust the immortal gods who secretly govern the universe.
