The Honorary Consul

The story is set in a small politically unstable Latin American country and follows Dr. Eduardo Plarr, who is half English and half Latino and left his home to seek a better life. Along the way, he meets a variety of people, including British Consul Charley Fortnum, a representative in Latin America attempting to prevent a revolution. He is also an alcoholic with remorse. Clara, the doctor's next encounter, is someone he immediately falls in love with, but there's a catch: Clara is Charley's wife.
