The Last Days on Mars

On the final day of the first manned mission to Mars, a Tantalus Base crew member believes he has made a remarkable discovery – fossilized evidence of bacterial life. He disobeys orders to pack up and goes on an unauthorized expedition to collect additional samples, refusing to let the relief crew take all of the credit. However, a routine excavation turns into a disaster when the porous ground collapses and he falls into a deep crevice, near death. His bereaved coworkers try to recover his body. When another vanishes, however, they begin to suspect that the life-form they have discovered is not without danger.
