Set in early 1900s Shanghai, THE LAST TYCOON follows CHENG (Chow Yun-Fat), a young man who is set up by the chief of police (Sammo Hung) and forced to abandon his life and QIU (Monica Mok), the woman he loves, in order to start over. CHENG quickly and viciously climbs the ladder of Shanghai's criminal underworld to become one of the most powerful mob leaders in the city's history following his escape from prison. However, fame and celebrity take a toll on CHENG as he is trapped between the oncoming Japanese army and the cunning local secret agency. Things only become worse when he runs into his life's love, QIU, and her writer husband. Will romance reignite at the ephemeral end of an era?
