Ben Quick relocates to Frenchman's Bend, MS after being evicted from another town for reportedly setting fire to a barn in retaliation. Will Varner owns nearly everything in Frenchman's Bend, and he employs Ben at his business. Will believes his own son, Jody, who oversees the store, is lacking in ambition and despairs of him becoming pregnant with his wife, Eula. Will believes that Clara, a schoolteacher, will never marry. He determines that Ben Quick would make an excellent husband for Clara in order to provide some new blood to the family.
