In the Crimea, the Reds and Whites continue to fight, and Jeanne learns that her beloved is a Bolshevik (when he kills her father). She returns to Paris, where she works for her uncle, despite being penniless. Her lover, Andreas, arrives in France shortly thereafter to organize the sailors in Toulon. Khalibiev, a robber, traitor, and libertine who desires to seduce Jeanne, is likewise a similar individual. His plots, Jeanne and Andreas's naiveté, and a misplaced diamond drive the lovers to the edge of disaster.
