The Magician
The Magician (Ansiktet) is an engrossing, wonderfully crafted tale of deception from one of cinema's most accomplished illusionists, Ingmar Bergman. Doctor Vogler, a nineteenth-century itinerant mesmerist and salesman of potions, is put to the test in Stockholm by the harsh, eminently rational royal medical adviser Dr. Vergérus. Max von Sydow portrays Dr. Vogler in this period drama. Ultimately, the outcome is an ingeniously cunning battle of wits that is both frightening and humorous, and it is shot in rich, wonderfully gothic black and white.
