Test pilot John Mitchell seems doomed to fail in his attempts to make life better for his wife Mary and their two kids, and he blames himself. Mitchell will test the company's new rocket-powered transport plane at the Conway Aero-Manufacturing Company in Wolverhampton. He will do this with two important passengers on board: Ministry official Crabtree and buyer's representative Ashmore. Mitchell's boss, Reg Conway, tells him that if Ashmore doesn't recommend the plane, the company will go out of business and Mitchell will lose his job, since the plane isn't even insured and all of the company's money is tied to it. When the plane is in the air, one of the engines catches on fire. The passengers and other crew members jump out of the plane, but Mitchell refuses to follow orders to ditch the plane in the Irish Sea.
