Thomas Jerome Newton is an alien who has traveled to Earth in search of water to preserve his planet. Thomas, with the assistance of attorney Oliver Farnsworth, exploits his knowledge of modern technology to build successful ideas. Thomas falls in love with Mary-Lou, a shy hotel worker, while creating a system for transporting water.
