The Marriage of Maria Braun

Maria marries Hermann near the conclusion of World War II, and he is promptly deployed to battle. Maria believes Hermann is dead when the war ends. She begins her career as a bartender at an Allied establishment, where she meets American soldier Bill. They begin a relationship that is cut short when Hermann is resurrected. Maria unintentionally murders Bill during a brawl between the males. Hermann accepts responsibility and is sentenced to prison, while Maria begins a difficult new life.
