Myles Clarkson, a dissatisfied pianist himself, is overjoyed to be interviewed by Duncan Ely, a genius. Duncan, on the other hand, is terminally ill and shows little interest in Myles until he notices Myles' hands are great for piano. Suddenly, he becomes obsessed with his new acquaintance, and Myles' wife, Paula, develops suspicions about Duncan's motives. Her suspicions are heightened when Duncan dies and Myles inexplicably transforms into a virtuoso.
