The occult sciences and esotericism were hugely popular in Petersburg around the end of the nineteenth century. During her tour of Russia, British medium Olivia Reed draws crowds to her public spiritual meetings in Moscow. Murders are occurring in the city in a weird ritualistic pattern at this time. On the streets, young women are being kidnapped and their disfigured bodies are turning up all over the city. Rostov, a young police officer, and Ganin, his assistant, conduct the inquiry. Each additional victim only adds to the confusion.
