Poland at the start of 1945. Under the cover of punishing "national traitors," the Communist Security Service is annihilating its opponents in a freshly liberated country. They establish a labor camp for Germans, Silesians, and Poles on the site of the former Nazi concentration camp Zgoda / Reconciliation. Franek becomes a camp warder to save Polish prisoner Anna. He doesn't realize that his German friend Erwin, a prisoner, has loved this girl for a long time. Franek joins the communists in the vain aim of outwitting the system.
