The narrative of seamstress Hester Prynne, who becomes an outcast after becoming pregnant by a clergyman, is set in puritanical Boston in the mid-1600s. She refuses to reveal the father's name, is "convicted" of adultery, and forced to wear a scarlet "A" until an Indian invasion brings the Puritans together and forces them to reconsider their laws and morality.
