Fiona, a 10-year-old girl from Donegal, Ireland, is transferred to live with her grandparents in a small fishing community. She quickly discovers that a local tradition claims that an ancestor of hers married a Selkie - a seal with the ability to transform into a human. Years before, Fiona's baby brother was carried away at sea and never returned, so when she spots a nude small boy on the deserted island of Roan Inish, she feels driven to look into the situation.
