Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes) works as a journalist and poet despite being dependent on an iron lung due to polio as a child. Mark's curiosity is piqued by a writing assignment about sex and the disabled, so he chooses to look into the prospect of experiencing sex himself. He makes an appointment with sex surrogate Cheryl Green (Helen Hunt) to lose his virginity when his overtures toward a caretaker scare her away.
