Texan state officials take custody of Lou-Jean and Clovis Poplin's infant son and they vow to do everything it takes to reclaim him from the state of the state. Lou-Jean frees Clovis from prison, and the two of them kidnap their son from his foster home, as well as kidnapping and holding captive a highway patrol officer. As a vast dragnet begins to pursue them across Texas, the pair emerges as odd folk heroes, and they even begin to form a bond with the captured police officer.
