In 1957, a simple romantic tragedy begins. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French car mechanic, loves Geneviève Emery,17, an employee in her widowed mother's umbrella shop. Guy and Geneviève make love the night before Guy leaves for a two-year military tour in Algeria.
