A feral boy is discovered outside the town of Aveyron, France, in 1798. He is committed to an asylum after being diagnosed with mental illness. Jean Itard, a young doctor who specializes in ear-nose-throat physiology and deaf-mute education, becomes convinced that the boy has normal mental capacity but that his development has been hampered by his lack of contact with society. He takes the boy home, names him Victor, and embarks on a lengthy educational journey.
