They Rode West

Dr. Allen Seward (Robert Francis) is sent to a western cavalry post where his predecessors were drunks and slackers. The post doesn't like him either, especially after he flouts norms and attends to the sick Indians on the malaria-infested reservations. The Indians leave the reservation to move to a healthier, higher place. When they join with the Comanches to attack the fort, Seward is called a "woodhawk," which is a bird that turns against its own kind. It's no surprise that Donna Reed, the niece of post commander Phil Carey, is in the movie. Carey, a cavalry captain who believes that only a dead Indian can be considered a good Indian, and May Wynn, the white girl raised by Indians and married to the chief's son, are the three main characters in this film. Francis would make only two more movies before he was killed in a plane crash in 1955.
