Eddie Dodd is a disillusioned former civil rights attorney who has turned his attention to defending drug dealers. Having studied Eddie's outstanding cases and now wishing to learn from him, Roger Baron, a recent law school graduate, has expressed interest in working with him. Eddie hesitantly accepts a case involving a young Korean guy who, according to his mother, has been imprisoned for eight years for a murder he did not commit. With Roger's idealistic urging, Eddie agrees to take on the case.
