After being shanghaied onboard the Pilgrim, one of his father's own ships, in 1834, Charles Stewart (Alan Ladd), the spoilt, dissolute son of a shipping magnate, is forced to flee the country. He is forced to embark on a lengthy and torturous sea voyage under the dictatorial authority of Captain Francis Thompson (Howard Da Silva), who is aided by his first mate, Amazeen (Azad Khan) (William Bendix). Richard Henry Dana Jr., one of his crewmates, is a well-known actor (Brian Donlevy).
