When Umberto Domenico Ferrari returns home from a protest demanding an increase in old-age pensions, his landlady expects her 15,000-lire rent by the end of the month or he and his tiny dog will be thrown out onto the street. Umberto, unable to obtain the funds in a timely manner, fabricates a sickness in order to be admitted to a hospital, entrusting his pet puppy to the landlady's pregnant and abandoned maid for temporary care.
