Zulu Dawn

Due to inept leadership, the British suffered a heavy defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879. 15 years after his hugely popular Zulu, Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn. Set in 1879, this film depicts the disastrous Battle of Isandhlwana, which remains the British army's worst defeat by natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16-to-1 by Zulu tribesmen. The film's point of view on events is immediately apparent in the title sequence, which contrasts ebullient African village life presided over by King Cetshwayo with aristocratic artifice under the arrogant eye of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the center of everything that goes wrong, starting the disastrous battle with an ultimatum issued ostensibly to give his troops something to do. His detached demeanor leads to a series of blunders.
