At the Movies

At the Movies is a TV show made by Disney-ABC Domestic Television in which two film critics talk about new movies. The program was shown under different names. Its first hosts were Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times and WLS-TV and Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune and WBBM-TV. Richard Roeper of the Sun-Times became Ebert's regular partner in 2000, after Siskel's death in 1999. In 2006, Ebert stopped making appearances so he could get treatment for thyroid cancer. Various guest hosts filled in for him. From April to August of 2008, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune cohosted. On September 6, 2008, film critic and reporter for E! Entertainment Television Ben Lyons and Sirius Satellite Radio host, former co-host of The Young Turks, and current Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz took over as hosts. On August 5, 2009, it was announced that Michael Phillips and A. O. Scott, a film critic for the New York Times, would return to the show on September 5, 2009. During its run with Siskel and Ebert as hosts, the series was nominated seven times for Primetime Emmy Awards and once for Outstanding Information Series. The last nomination was in 1997. It was well-known for the "thumbs up/thumbs down" reviews given by Siskel and Ebert. The show was shown in syndication in the United States and on CTV in Canada. It was also shown throughout the week on the cable network ReelzChannel.
