Carlos is a French-German television and movie biopic from 2010 about the life of the international terrorist Carlos the Jackal in the 1970s, from his first series of attacks in 1973 until he was caught in 1994. It was first shown as a three-part miniseries on the French pay channel Canal+ on May 19, May 26, and June 2, 2010. The entire 512 hour version was presented out of competition at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival on the same day it debuted on Canal+. It was made by Daniel Leconte of the French production company Film En Stock and Jens Meuer of the German production company Egoli Tossell Film, along with Canal+ and French Arte. Olivier Assayas directed it from a script written by Leconte, Assayas, and Dan Franck, and Édgar Ramrez plays the role of Carlos. The movie is available as both a three-part miniseries and a feature film with different running times between 338 and 319 minutes. It is also available in several shorter versions with running times between 187 and 166 minutes. Carlos has won both theatrical and TV awards, including the 2010 Golden Globe for "Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television," the 2010 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director, the 2010 National Society of Film Critics award for "Best Director," the 2010 New York Film Critics Circle award for "Best Foreign Language Film," and the 2010 National Society of Film Critics award for "Best Director."
