The Italian adventurer and libertine Giovanni Jacopo Casanova lived from 1725 to1798, yet in this six-part series, Dennis Potter tries to establish a modern relevance for his major sex and religion-related issues. "Casanova was concerned with religious and sexual liberty, and these are the issues we must now address," he stated. Casanova was imprisoned in Venice in1755, and Potter employed this occurrence as a primary motif, continually intercutting Casanova's dazzling, joyous, and warmly lighted love adventures with his miserable solitary captivity in a half-dimmed cell.
