Celebrity Deathmatch is a claymation television show that pits famous people against one another in a wrestling ring. The show almost invariably results in the grisly death of the person who comes out on the losing end. It was notorious for the enormous amount of blood that was used in each fight as well as the exaggerated injuries that participants received. Eric Fogel is the mind behind the series, and the pilot episodes debuted on MTV on January 1 and January 25 of 1998. There were a total of 75 episodes in the first run of the series, which began on May 14, 1998 and ended on October 20, 2002. The episode "Celebrity Deathmatch Hits Germany," which broadcast on June 21, 2001, was a one-off special that was not included toward the final episode tally. Stone Cold Steve Austin, a professional wrestler, provided the voice for his animated persona in his role as a guest commentator. MTV made the announcement that a film adaptation of the series will be in the works at the beginning of 2003; however, the film adaptation was scrapped by the time the year was over. As a part of their "Sic 'Em Friday" programming block in 2005, MTV2 announced that they will be bringing the show back to life. The premiere was originally scheduled to take place in November 2005, but it was moved to June 10, 2006 so that it could be included in a new block of programming called "Sic'emation" alongside two other animated shows, Where My Dogs At and The Adventures of Chico and Guapo. Cuppa Coffee Studios was in charge of producing the show's fifth season, and the premiere attracted in more than 2.5 million viewers, making it the most watched season opener in the history of MTV2's ratings.
