Chakuro is the Mud Whale's 14-year-old archivist, a near-utopian island that floats across the surface of an infinite sand sea. Nine out of ten Mud Whale residents have been given the capacity to use saimia, extraordinary abilities that sentence them to death. Chakuro and his companions have visited other islands, but they have never met, seen, or even heard of a person not from their own. Chakuro visits a Mud Whale-sized island one day and finds a girl who would transform his life.
