The teen drama series known as Degrassi Junior High was broadcast on CBC Television in Canada from 1987 through 1989. It was a spin-off of the original Degrassi series. The sitcom chronicled the life of a group of students who attended the fictitious institution that served as the show's namesake. The series was praised for its sympathetic and realistic representation of the issues that teenagers face in their daily lives, and several episodes dealt with sensitive subjects such as drug use, child abuse, adolescent pregnancy, homosexuality, homophobia, racism, and divorce. The majority of the actors in the program were not professional performers, which contributed to the impression that it was based in reality. Stacie Mistysyn, Neil Hope, Anais Granofsky, Sarah Charlesworth, and a number of other performers were among those who starred in this series. The Kids of Degrassi Street had aired a few years before and featured many of the same characters. However, since their character identities and the circumstances of their families had been altered, Degrassi Junior High cannot be considered a direct spinoff of the original series. Stephen Stohn, who would go on to become the executive producer of Degrassi: The Next Generation, served as the legal counsel for each and every one of the episodes. The series was shot in the vacant Vincent Massey Public School in Etobicoke, Ontario, in the Canadian province of Ontario.
