Elizabeth I is a 2005 British miniseries directed by Tom Hooper and written by Nigel Williams. Helen Mirren plays Elizabeth I of England. Miniseries covers last 24 years of her nearly 45-year rule. Part 1 focuses on her last years with Earl of Leicester (Jeremy Irons). Part 2 focuses on her relationship with Hugh Dancy's Essex. The series originally aired in two 2-hour portions on Channel 4. It aired on HBO in the US, CBC and TMN in Canada, ATV in Hong Kong, ABC in Australia, and TVNZ Television One in New Zealand. Emmy, Peabody, and Golden Globe awards followed. The same year, Helen Mirren featured as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, which dominated award season.
