From 1988 through1995, Empty Nest was an American sitcom that aired on NBC. Susan Harris, the show's creator and producer, designed it as a spin-off of The Golden Girls. Empty Nest was one of the top ten most-watched shows on television for the first three seasons. Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions collaborated with Touchstone Television on the project. The show's concept was inspired by the British comedy series Father, Dear Father, which likewise had a father with two kids and a huge dog. Unlike that series, however, the two daughters in Empty Nest are self-sufficient adults, and the protagonist is a widower. NBC's Saturday night block featured Empty Nest, which premiered at 9:30 p.m. ET in its first four seasons, immediately following The Golden Girls. Two of the cast members were from Susan Harris' previous program, Soap; Mulligan played Manoff's father-in-law in Soap.
