Fawlty Towers is a British sitcom made by BBC Television. It was first shown on BBC2 in 1975 and 1979. Twelve episodes were made. The show was written by John Cleese and his wife at the time, Connie Booth. Both of them also acted in the show. The series is set in Fawlty Towers, a made-up hotel in the seaside town of Torquay, on the "English Riviera." The plots revolve around the tense, rude, and put-upon hotel owner Basil Fawlty, his bossy wife Sybil, a relatively normal chambermaid named Polly, and a hapless Spanish waiter named Manuel. They all try to run the hotel in the midst of funny situations and a wide range of demanding and strange guests. In 2000, the British Film Institute put together a list of the best British TV shows of all time based on votes from people in the industry. Fawlty Towers was named the best British TV show of all time.
