The long-running British television series Food and Drink airs on BBC Two. It aired for the first time between 1982 and 2002 and was the first British national television program to cover food and drink without cookery and recipe demonstrations. Created in 1982 by BBC producer Henry Murray based on an original concept by Jancis Robinson, Fay Maschler, and Paul Levy, the first series was hosted by Simon Bates and Gillian Miles and included Jilly Goolden in her first regular television appearances. Russell Harty offered video location reports on great eateries in the United Kingdom. This series included the unusual concept of a small audience of 20 "tasters and testers." The first season aired during the summer months of the 1980s and was an instant hit, attracting an average of 1.5 million viewers per week, a high rating for BBC Two during the summer. Later seasons were hosted by Chris Kelly, chef Michael Barry, wine specialists Jilly Goolden and Oz Clarke, and wine expert Jilly Goolden. During the summer break of1987, the spin-off panel game Food and Drink Summer Quiz was broadcast. Simon May composed the theme song. On 4 February2013, Michel Roux Jr. and Kate Goodman returned to BBC Two to co-host Food and Drink.
