Freakazoid! is an American animated television series developed by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini for The WB's Kids' WB programming block. The series follows the exploits of the title character, Freakazoid, a wild, psychotic superhero who faces a slew of super villains. The show also includes mini-episodes on the exploits of other strange superheroes. Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation collaborated on the project. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros. Animation collaborated on the third animated series. With Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs on the air, rumors of Freakazoid! debuting on the Hub Network are circulating. Bruce Timm, best known as a major character in the DC animated universe, intended it to be a straightforward superhero action-adventure cartoon with comic overtones, but executive producer Steven Spielberg asked series producer and writer Tom Ruegger and the Animaniacs team to turn Freakazoid! into a straight-up comedy. The comedy is similar to other Ruegger-led shows such as Animaniacs, and the humor is distinctive in its use of slapstick, fourth wall firings, parody, surreal humor, and pop cultural references.
