Haruka Nanase is the main character in the story. He has always loved being in water and swimming in it. Before he graduated from elementary school, he swam in a competition with Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka, all of whom were also in his swimming club. After they won, the boys all went their separate ways. After some time, Rin showed up in the middle of their boring high school lives and challenged Haruka to a fight. During the match, Rin showed Haruka how powerful he was. Haruka doesn't want it to end this way, so she gets Makoto and Nagisa together again and adds Rei Ryugazaki as a new member to make the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club. This is how she plans to beat Rin.
