Grand Designs: The Street has been in the works for five years. In this six-part series hosted by Kevin McCloud, cameras follow the first ten pioneering families who are constructing a fresh new street from the ground up on what will become the UK's largest self-build project. This groundbreaking experiment will take place near Bicester, about 14 miles from Oxford and under an hour by train from London. Instead of selling the site to a developer for a quick profit, the local council pre-approved outline plans and sold parcels to the general public for roughly £100,000. Each house has an average budget of £250,000, and each family hopes to build for less than they would pay to buy in the region. Each household has the opportunity to express themselves in their choice of design and building methods, with ages ranging from 24 to 72, budgets ranging from £160k to £500k, and pre-approved outline planning. Throughout the series, cameras will follow these brave self-builders as they build their one-of-a-kind homes, transforming a field into a self-build street. It's a fantastic chance, but it's not without risk. These pioneers would suffer injuries, structural failures, and physical and financial weariness as a result of their efforts. Friendships and relationships will suffer as a result of the strain of self-improvement. Those that saw the projects through to completion, on the other hand, will be rewarded with exquisite homes that are suited to their specific needs, on a street unlike any other in the UK.
