Homicide: Life on the Street

An American police procedural television series, Homicide: Life on the Street follows the activities of a fictionalized version of the Homicide Unit of the Baltimore Police Department. A TV movie that served as the de facto series finale ended the show's seven-year run on NBC. Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, by David Simon, was the inspiration for the television series. Many of the show's characters and plots were inspired by Simon's own book, The Wire, which also served as the inspiration for his own HBO series. Despite the series' ensemble cast, Andre Braugher's portrayal of Frank Pembleton was the show's breakout star. In 1996, 1997, and 1998, the show earned Outstanding Achievement in Dramatic Programming from the Television Critics Association. In 1993, 1995, and 1997, it was the first drama to win three Peabody Awards for best drama. TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time ranked "Prison Riot" 32nd in 1997. Time magazine named it one of the "Best TV Shows of All-Time" in 2007. 'The Best Show You're Not Watching,' as TV Guide put it in 1996. According to Entertainment Weekly's ranking of "New TV Classics," the show came in at number 46.
